My Dreams are Your Dreams

Nightmares and dreams are often thought to be something we imagine when we sleep. Some think they relate to the world we live in and we are currently thinking about it in that state. To prove my point I will give you the definition of dream which is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. You may think this is true, but there is much more to it…

Around 55 million years ago, humans were walking the Earth. They didn’t know much, and they weren’t anything like they are now. It was now 33 million years after this that they began to have dreams. The vision of night was a gift offered to all. Through evolution, dreams began to get more and more unique. You may be asking why I am telling you all this; well, this is the story of how we all have our first and last dream.

It was the fall of 1867. Leaves of orange and reddish tint plagued the ground with much haste. I was in college working for a degree in psychology where I studied dreams. They fascinated me ever since I was young. I was often made fun of though for my odd obsession, but I just brushed it off as people just being rude. I continued my studies for many months later. It was now the fall of 1869 and I had graduated.

My plan was to create a way for people to take a medication where they could have and control whatever dream they wanted. I immediately started working in a small lab I have created in the basement of my home. As I worked, my fiancé would often come to comfort and watch me. She was intrigued with anything science related. She knew how I felt because she was often judged for how she dressed in black including her hair, but she was as normal as any other person.

My medication was almost finished. I was ready to become the richest person in Massachusetts and live the life I have always dreamed of. It would’ve all came true, if not for what happened. My formula was being formed when I accidentally tripped on the side of the table. As I fell I tried to grab the table to stop my fall; instead, I broke a beaker sending the chemicals to mix with another chemical that was in a beaker. What happened next changed my life forever.

The infused chemicals burst like a small scale explosion of green all over the room. Fortunately, I was right under the table where they couldn’t hit me. After the chemicals stopped, I got up to run to my wife, until I saw what had happened. She was still in her chair, head burnt, hands burnt, and clothes burnt. As I reached to her slowly, hand trembling, I collapsed to the ground. The chemicals released a gas into the room sending me into a sleep state, or worse…

I saw nothing but darkness, black all around. Strangely though, I could walk and had control of my every movement. I lifted my hands up trying to feel around me. Then, something happened. A sparkle fell from my hand, creating light. As I tried again, I made more. Just then, I felt the worse pain in my life, it all was coming through my head. The pain then ceased, and I had the knowledge of every dream and nightmare that ever existed. I then tried the thing again, and it appeared to me. It was sand, and I was creating dreams.

The more sand I used, the more knowledge of dreams came to my head. I created horses, dragons, anything fantasy like. I could hear the laughter of children as I created these dreams; but then, a dark purple fell, and I heard screams. I was creating a nightmare, and I couldn’t stop it. I now heard children crying for their parents. The pain I felt, and I couldn’t stop it. I was creating more and more and there was nothing I could do.

I had no control of what I was doing, so stopped, but after this, my body began to ache. If I stopped creating dreams and nightmares, I would begin to hurt tremendously. So I kept doing it. I was haunted by the laughing and crying of children.

Some dreams were good, some were horrid, but there was nothing I could do but be tortured for eternity. Every time someone new came into the world, I immediately knew for their dreams would swarm my head. Every time someone left and was dead, I knew their last dream. Every time someone died, I felt as if a part of me had died, but I was doomed to this fate forever, and there was nothing I could do…
