When I was a Little Girl

When I was a little girl, my grandmother would always sing to me;

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do

I’m half crazy, all for the love of you

It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage

But you’ll look sweet, upon the seat of a bicycle built for two

I would fall asleep to her voice lulling me.

My grandmother died in a freak accident. She was swimming in Daisy Creek, when she drowned. She was a strong swimmer. Nobody thought she had ‘just drowned’.

It had been said, that Daisy Creek was haunted and anyone to die there would never fully pass onto the other side.

I never believed this silly myth, I was always one for logic and scientific evidence.

Later one night, about a month after my grandmothers drowning, I was laying in my bed. I couldn’t sleep. Something just didn’t feel right.

It was very cold. There was ice forming on the windows. I couldn’t feel my toes.

I could hear the faintest footsteps, but I just disregarded it, thinking it was my mother.

I heard the sound of my door opening. I hid under the covers. I feel the bed dip beside me. My breath stills.

I feel the covers being tucked slightly under my sides.

I take my head out from under the blankets. My grandmother smiles at me. I wipe my eyes, thinking I was asleep and it was all a dream.

She cups my cheek.

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do

I’m half crazy, all for the love to you

It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage

But you’ll look sweet, upon a seat of a bicycle built for two
