Don’t be a Surgeon in Rhode Island

It was a breezy morning in Rhode Island, my home. It was the place I was born, the place I worked, had kids, and eventually died. The last part is the one I should probably tell you, as the entity that did it, is a threat to the entire world.

Anyway, back to the story. I had clocked in for work on a July morning. I greeted the front desk, my nurses, and the other doctors like I did everyday. Hell, if I knew what would happen that day, I would turn right around, and leave the country. Anything to get away from that thing.

The day was pretty standard, as all I did was do a couple of check ups, prescribed pills, and filed reports. I was beginning to clock out, when a nurse sprinted down the hall. I looked at the lady in the front desk, which she was already looking at me, and turned back at the nurse. She started yelling, “Doctor! Doctor! We need your help! There’s a young lady in labor, and the doctor at hand has been injured!” I hurried to join the nurse, and soon, we were at the operating table. I started getting ready for the operation, but something seemed off. There was no doctor to be seen in the room.

“Call me crazy, but I could have sworn you said there was a doctor in here…” That’s all I could mutter before turning around. The entire room was decreped, dirty, and dark. I turned back around, thinking that, in some crazy universe, well I guess mine, this could be an illusion, or a day dream. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking.

When I turned to the operating table, I seen a single skeleton. A ragged operating apron was on it. It looked similar to the one the young lady was wearing. I began to look for a way out of the room, but the effort was fruitless. I began to feel claustrophobic, and began to hear whispers. Brief sentences like, “Your time has come” and “Thy has taken a piece from me, so I shall take from you…” I was now in a fetal position, against the operating table.

I started pleading to God, apologising to my children and wife, for not being there enough, and instead at this stupid hospital, and opened my eyes. I seen a ghostly, shadowy figure staring back. It then grinned. I knew whatever it was, it wasn’t human. How it could smile like that without tearing its face in half surprised me. Its bulging eyes made me want to close mine. After what felt like forever, it spoke.

“I hope you’ve missed me… You took from me, so I take from you…”

I finally realized who it was… I pushed back this memory so far back I couldn’t even remember it all. Just brief flashes. I didn’t get to this spot in life without cheating. No one ever can. I originally started out as a Black Market donor. The people I hurt flashed by in my head. I started to cry, feel remorse, and I cried out.

“I’m so sorry! I just wanted to help my family!” I couldn’t speak anymore. Though it could…

It spoke, “Lies! All you wanted to do was hurt others! You may have helped you and your family, but you hurt other families! You even forgot about all us… Though soon you can join us… I hope you have fun.” It began to chuckle. Its laugh was unbearable. As I was still looking into the past, I felt a pain in my side. I looked down, and seen a whole where my liver used to be, and then I looked up, to where my liver was now. The entity clenched the organ, and vanished. The lights turned back on, the nurses were in there panicking, and a nurse left the room. I heard yelling, and hurried footsteps approaching the door. Then I passed out.
